Residents Drive the Conversation During Classic Cars Presentation

St. Paul’s welcomed guest presenter John Martin for a lively program on classic cars as part of the community’s Distinguished Speakers Series at The Villas.

Before the presentation, residents were invited to share the name of a dream car they once owned or always wished they had. The responses spanned more than a century of automotive history—from a 1902 Oldsmobile to Mustangs, Corvettes, Buicks, and many more.

John used those resident submissions to shape the entire presentation.

He began by sharing his own connection to cars, recalling how he grew up in a car-loving family and worked alongside his father at a gas station near New Castle. At just 16 years old, he bought his first car—a 1959 Pontiac—for $20, hauling it out of the weeds and beginning the restoration himself. That experience sparked a lifelong passion. John later built a career selling automotive paint for PPG across Mercer and Lawrence Counties.

From there, the focus turned to the residents’ cars. Using their dream car list as a guide, John led the audience through the decades, explaining how automotive design evolved over time and how broader social changes—from economic booms to cultural trends—influenced the vehicles people drove and admired.

As the slideshow progressed, residents were captivated. Familiar favorites appeared on the screen, including Herbie, the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard, and Lightning McQueen from Cars. John connected each era’s innovations—such as wraparound windshields, whitewall tires, vinyl tops, and even “port-a-walls”—to the cars residents had personally chosen, bringing their memories vividly to life.

Movie Cars

Throughout the program, residents responded with laughter, questions, and stories of their own, creating a lively and interactive atmosphere. The room traveled through more than a century of automotive history—from the sleek 1955 Bel Air to the 1969 Mustang, British roadsters, and Lincoln Navigators—all through the lens of cars that held special meaning for the people in the audience.

Moments like this are what make the Distinguished Speakers Series at St. Paul’s so meaningful. The programs aren’t just about a topic—they’re about honoring the experiences residents bring with them and building conversations around the memories they share.
